GST (Goods and Services Tax) in India

Goods and Services Tax (GST) is an indirect tax levied on the supply of goods and services in India. Introduced on 1 July 2017, GST brought many central and state indirect taxes under a common tax framework. It generally follows a destination-based system, meaning tax revenue is allocated according to where goods or services are consumed, subject to GST law.

The applicable GST rate depends on the type and classification of the goods or services, the nature of the supply, and the relevant tax notifications. Some supplies are taxable at a specified rate, while others may be nil-rated, exempt, or subject to special provisions.

Types of GST in India

India's GST system uses four main types of tax: CGST, SGST, IGST and UTGST. The applicable type depends primarily on whether a supply takes place within a state or union territory, or between different states or union territories.

1

Central GST (CGST)

Central government's component on eligible intra-state supplies. Charged alongside SGST when supply is within the same state.

Example: At 18% total GST → 9% CGST + 9% SGST
2

State GST (SGST)

State government's component on supplies made within that state. Charged together with CGST on intra-state transactions.

Example: Supply in Maharashtra at 18% → 9% CGST + 9% SGST
3

Integrated GST (IGST)

Applies to inter-state supplies and imports. Levied by the Centre, with revenue shared between Centre and states.

Example: Maharashtra → Karnataka at 18% → full 18% IGST
4

UT GST (UTGST)

Applies to intra-territory supplies in union territories without a legislature, alongside CGST. Similar role to SGST.

For UTs with a legislature (Delhi, Puducherry), SGST applies instead.

How to calculate GST

A GST calculator helps estimate the tax amount and the total price of a taxable supply.

GST amount formula
GST amount = Taxable amount × GST rate ÷ 100
Total amount including GST
Total amount = Taxable amount + GST amount

Example: Taxable value ₹1,000 at 18% GST rate

  • Taxable value: ₹1,000
  • GST amount: ₹1,000 × 18 ÷ 100 = ₹180
  • Total amount including GST: ₹1,180

For an intra-state supply, the ₹180 would split into ₹90 CGST + ₹90 SGST. For an inter-state supply, it would be ₹180 IGST.

If a quoted price already includes GST:

GST from inclusive price
GST included = Inclusive price × GST rate ÷ (100 + GST rate)

Example: Inclusive price ₹1,180 at 18% GST → GST component is ₹180 and taxable value is ₹1,000.
